Top Star

Teaching Obesity Prevention in Early Childcare and Education Settings, TOP Star for short, is a Utah Department of Health program created to improve the health of children who are cared for in early childcare and education settings. Our program supports childcare providers by improving their nutrition, physical activity and breastfeeding environments and policies to help promote health and prevent obesity in children. Schedule an appointment today to start the certification process.

Benefits for Centers

If you are a childcare provider, you make a difference in children’s lives. You have the opportunity to affect their lives by creating healthy behaviors that will last a lifetime.

Facilities can promote and market their TOP Star endorsement to parents and the community to increase marketability. They are also able to earn continuing education hours to fulfill credit towards the Child Development Associate, Career Ladder Credit, Child Care Licensing, staff CDA or Child Care Quality System. Facilities also receive fun incentives upon completion of the program such as $50-$100 gift cards, toys, access to special events, quarterly newsletters, menus, lesson plans and more!

Facilities can become TOP Star endorsed in four steps:

  1. Complete a pre-assessment
  2. Develop and implement an action plan to improve current policies
  3. Participate in six online training modules
  4. Complete a post-assessment

Benefits for Families

Parents benefit from TOP Star by knowing their child is in a healthy environment.

With a TOP Star facility you’ll know that your child care provider has created opportunities for your children to learn about healthy eating habits, to actively play together both indoors and out, and to engage in less screen time. TOP Star providers also support you and your baby’s breastfeeding wishes. All of these practices help establish healthy lifestyles for children while they are young, lowering their risk of having chronic health problems throughout their lifetime.
